# When a VRBO Said "No DJ" 60 Days Out — And We Still Got the Party Started

Sixty days before the wedding, the venue changed its mind.

Our couple had booked a VRBO just outside Flagstaff for their reception — one of those beautiful, flexible rental properties that more couples are choosing over traditional venues these days. When they first toured it, they asked the question every couple should ask: "Can we have a DJ?" The answer was yes. Contracts got signed. Deposits went out. A full vendor team, including 7000 Feet Of Sound, got booked.

Then, two months out, the property owners reversed course: no DJ allowed.

For a couple who'd already built their whole reception timeline — dinner, toasts, first dances, an open dance floor — around live music and an MC keeping things moving, that's not a small hiccup. It's the kind of curveball that can unravel a wedding day. But they didn't cancel or panic. They adjusted, and we adjusted with them.

The Wedding Day

We showed up ready to work within the venue's new rules — lower profile, more restrained, still fully present for the couple. And for most of the night, it worked. Buffet dinner, toasts from the maid of honor, best man, and mother of the groom, the mother-son and father-daughter dances, then the couple's first dance to "Conversations in the Dark" before opening the floor to everyone under a black, white, and dark red color palette. Exactly the night they'd planned.

Then, about ninety minutes before the reception was scheduled to end, the property managers shut it down. New rules, cited on the spot. The dance floor emptied. Guests filed toward the door. You could see it on the couple's faces — this wasn't how they'd pictured the night ending.

The Save

This is the part of the job that has nothing to do with a playlist. Our DJ made a quick call to a friend who owns a local soft-serve ice cream truck — and a few minutes later, guests heading for their cars heard an ice cream truck jingle rolling up the driveway instead.

"The party's not over," the DJ announced over what sound system was left. "There's a sweet treat waiting out front."

The couple led everyone outside, cones in hand, and what could have been a flat, disappointing ending turned into the story their guests are still telling.

What This One Taught Us

Get venue policies in writing, and re-check them close to the date. Non-traditional venues — VRBOs, Airbnbs, private estates — offer flexibility traditional venues can't, but their rules can change with new ownership, new management, or a noise complaint from a neighbor. Confirming twice is worth it.

A shutdown 90 minutes early doesn't have to be the story your guests remember. The job isn't just running the music — it's protecting the night when something outside anyone's control goes sideways.



Who you hire matters more when things don't go as planned. Anyone can play songs from a list when the night goes smoothly. The value of an experienced DJ/MC shows up when it doesn't.
