How much does a wedding DJ really cost?

The short answer...it depends....the long answer thought has a few more factors to consider when thinking of what a DJ costs and why. The Average wedding DJ across the country currently charges $1,500 per Wedding Pro (Wedding Wire and The Knot).So before you hire you have to ask your self do you want cheap and tacky, average, or something more?

Amazingly you can find a wedding DJ for as low as $250 for the day ymmv and you really need to vet that DJ first. A DJ who doesn't' respect their own time won't respect yours to say the least. On average a wedding DJ will be between $150 and $400 per hour, yes I know a big variance. A few of the things that can change the pricing and why one DJ cost more than others are:

Investment in thier equipment

Every DJ has a different investment in their craft. With decent PA speakers starting at $400 each a DJ can get into weddings for around $2500 on the cheap end. Though a DJ who has this small of an investment usually doesn't have backup gear or in some cases the knowledge of what to do when things go wrong with equipment. As well this lower end equipment may not sound as clean or as loud as you may want for your big day. As well the lighting the bring may be more reminiscent of a kids party with the colored dots everywhere and strobe lights constantly flashing.

While on the more high end of equipment speakers tend to cost $2500+ each and lighting tends to match the overall experience and vibe of the couple. it gets programmed to each individual song creating a more cohesive experience overall. This can be one of the biggest differentiators between a cheap or mid-priced DJ and someone on the higher end. The little touches that customize your day for both the eyes and the ears.

For us we don't bring cheap and tacky equipment to your wedding. It's an event that's elegant even if it's in your backyard. You've worked hard for this moment and you deserve it to not look cheap and tacky.

They learned years ago how to do what they do and they've not take the time to learn anything else. We see this often with DJ's who say things like "I don't have to mix music at a wedding, I've been doing it without mixing for years and no ones ever complained".....yes we see this posted online more than once a day by DJ's across the world. A DJ who takes the time to learn their craft then practice and continue to build is a DJ that consistently delivers amazing results to their clients. Wait DJ's have to prepare for our wedding? They don't just show up and perform?
Nope...well the good ones at least prepare. When you see the price of a DJ and think "wow that's a lot to play some music and make announcements" ,which first of is a very small part of what a good wedding DJ does, think of the time they put in ahead of your wedding. Our newest Dj puts in around 15-20 hours for each wedding. Our most seasoned puts in 40-60 hours of time before your wedding has event started. This is time invested in finding music you love and songs you've forgotten, programming the music to the day and what fits where, and for our lead DJ matching the lighting to the music your chosen for dancing. Then add in the day of your wedding being a 10 hour day for most DJ's and you can see why pricing has increased. If you have a DJ who's only charging $600 to DJ your wedding and are putting in the minimum. amount of time, they are getting minimum wage to DJ your wedding (or less depending on the area). If the DJ thinks their time and talents are worth minimum wage, then what are they really bringing to your big day?

Investment in Communication

Here's a fun one, how's your DJ communicating with you? Are they using a personal cell phone or a business line, social media only or did they invest in a website? There's a lot of little costs in running a business that add up, and those cost get factored into the price of the package. For example in January of this year we've spent $800 just in advertising just to cut through the clutter of the inexperienced DJ's who are priced cheap. 1st:Your Wedding DJ is More Than Just Music

Your wedding DJ is so much more than music. They are the architect of your day. A good wedding DJ, knows what's going on, is in communication with your vendors, you as the couple and your guests. It's through this communication we call Emceeing, that your DJ helps to create and make the moments your guests remember for ages. We've even become responsible for things like photo booths, cold sparks, dancing on a cloud, and even send offs. It's the little (and big) things we do during your wedding that allows you to be stress free and your guests to only remember the good things that happened that day. We also become a sounding board for you, as I tell my clients "If you're stressing, give me that stress not your family. I won't see you tomorrow so it won't bother me". The little details become our big details and it's what makes your day run the way you want.

Speaking of the little details, your DJ/Mc should be the most aware person in the room. They need to keep an eye on your wedding and guests to ensure everyone is where they are supposed to be. Have you ever been to a wedding where the DJ called for a parent dance but the parent or bride/groom weren't in the room? It's awkward and makes everyone feel disjointed. A great Wedding Dj knows where people are before they do things. They check to ensure photo/video are in place and everyone knows what's about to happen. That's the #1 job of an MC, not making announcements. This is great to think about as you are hiring someone, if they have bad communication during the hiring process, what will it be like during the planning and execution of your day?

Planning your wedding takes time

It's Not Just the Day-of Work

2-4 hours of time on calls and emails before your big day. They are your expert in your corner and you want to be able to reach them and hear back in a reasonable amount of time. As well as utilize them to be a sounding board and help you plan the events and memories of the day.

8-20 hours of cultivating music and playlists for your day. As a DJ we want everything perfect and we are planning out the music of your day. Everything from the pre-ceremony song as guests arrive to your cocktail hour, dinner hour, and dancing playlists. For a great Dj it's never good enough to play what you wanted to hear, we want to play the songs you forgot you love.

4-30 hours of lighting and gear prep. For some DJ's cleaning gear, getting cables ready and showing up is great. For our top Dj and our second in command we want the lighting to enhance your wedding. We spend upwards fo 30 hours on every wedding programming lighting to your music. We want it to move in time, flash to the beat (not just strobe) and soften and brighten with key moments of your songs. It's takes your wedding from great to Extraordinary with a what looks like a simple touch.

So now that your DJ has 30-40 hours of setup time into your wedding it's time for the big day. You've got them for 6 hours, that's all they need right...right...wrong. Depending on what you purchased from your DJ you could see setup times as long as 3 hours. From uplighting, dance floor lighting, multiple sound systems, microphones, cold sparks, photo booths, it's a crazy long day. We've had 12 hour long weddings days with a 1 hour drive each way, 2 hour setup, and 2 hour tear down to go along with the wedding. Your DJ is one of the first into your venue and one of the last to leave. This all get factored into the pricing your DJ is charge. It does make you think though if a $600 DJ is putting 40 hours into your wedding between pre and the day of how much are they really getting paid for their time? Well it's less than Arizona Minimum wage $15/hour, and do you really want a minimum wage DJ for your wedding? If they can't respect their own time, how can they possible respect yours?

The Average Cost of a Sedona Wedding DJ

Cost for a Sedona Wedding DJ vary greatly. You can find DJ's as low as $600 and as high as $10,000. But why? Why such a massive different in price, and does the quality of the entertainment really change that much? In short, yes it does. Here's two reasons why the pricing can be so different from DJ to DJ.

1) Experience of the DJ- This is by far the biggest factor that determines what a DJ costs. Someone who is more seasoned and has more weddings under their belt is going to cost more. This experience directly translates to not only the help they will be in planning but also how they can move you and your guests with the music of the day. An experienced DJ can move between genre's of music, and knows when to play the right song to elevate the feeling and memories your guests leave with.

2) Equipment used - A professional DJ not only brings the right equipment, they also bring back up gear. You just never know when something electronic decides it just can't today so having a back up is crucial. DJ's who are newer or lower cost don't typically have the fund to invest in good gear and instead buy used or buy cheap items to get started. Used and cheap speakers can quickly turn a celebration into panic when they go out without a reason in the middle of important moments.

A great example of this, I recently worked at one of our favorite venues. The team there was talking about the DJ from the week before (yes your vendors remember what happened at your wedding). They mentioned that the DJ was a more inexperienced and inexpensive DJ. The biggest thing they said was that he didn't bring enough equipment. So during cocktail hour his speakers were outside and because the reception was inside he had to break everything down and setup for the reception half way through the cocktail hour. How Early Shoudl I book my DJ?

BOOK THEM! If you don't someone else will. As a prime example we get couple who reach out to us asking me specifically and I've been booked for 8+ months already. Top DJ talent can book out 12-24 months in advance.

Are travel fees included?

This is a great question to ask your DJ directly. We see some couples who find a "discount DJ" only to find out the price is $1,000 higher because of a travel fee. We are based in Flagstaff so you typically don't have a travel fee as far as Prescott, so Sedona is included in our base rates.

Can I request specific songs?

Of Course, but keep in mind you are hiring an expert. Telling them to stick to only one or two genres of music or creating a 6 hour playlist and forcing your DJ to stay to that leaves your guests feeling like they don't matter. That can also be a huge hit to the ego when you carefully crafted playlist bombs. It's the bain of any DJ's existence and why we know so much music and pay attention to what you and your guests are grooving to. Being able to move with you and the music means you get to have an amazing time and hear those songs that you didn't know you wanted to hear.

Do you take request from guests?

Probably the most controversial question to ask a group of DJ's (lol). Remember that whole ego thing from the last question, yeah DJ's are bad about that. What we tell our clients is "it's up to you" if you want us taking requests. You know your guests better than we do and know if they will keep things in a dancing vein or if they want to go off the rails and request things because they think they are funny. If there's one or two comedians at your wedding, let the DJ and coordinator know so they don't take requests from them.

One thing about the Arboretum is their dais and the walk up. You can't get a better setting and view as you and your wedding party enter the ceremony.
Mike entered on his own like the boss he is followed by the bridal party to the song Cecilia and the Wilderness by Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness. While Audrey was escorted down the aisle by her mother to Some Wild also by Andrew McMahon in the wilderness. From the start of this wedding the couple added touches of their music choices to the wedding. This is something we recommend to all of our couples. Your reception officially starts with your grand entrance. For our couples we highly recommend you go from your Grand entrance straight into your first dance. You're already on the dance floor, everyone's looking at you. Get it done and get it over with. Take Audrey and Mike for example, they brought their wedding party in by groups (bridesmaids then groomsmen) then came in themselves to a thunderous applause from their guests right into an amazing sunsetish first dance. It was a perfect resolve to the high energy of the grand entrance and a perfect segue into dinner.
